Artist Statement

I work in many media choosing the materials that suit the project and my mood.  I focus on colour, shape and texture as these are the elements that excite me the most.  My drawings and paintings that feature shells display my fascination with these natural objects and my attempt to express the beauty and sensuousness I observe within.   Lately I have become intrigued by the concept of taking a drawing of mine and transforming it into a beaded tapestry.  As I build a piece, watching as the image is created row by row,  the beauty of tiny glass beads being used as pixels creates within me a sense of wonderment and joy.

Combining all my artistic pleasures is done through fibre art; I use fabric, beads, buttons, found objects silk, cotton threads, wool, I incorporate drawings and whatever else suits the piece to create Fibre Collage.  With the rich history of needle arts, sometimes the only outlet women of the past had to express themselves, I consider this work to be a celebration of the feminine, an acknowledgment of the creativity of women of the past a celebration of the present and hope for the future.

Self Portrait Logo

I’m often asked about the logo I use on all my correspondence this is the result of a Self-portrait that I did while in College.  There was a call for artist for a portrait show, I did not want to do another look in the mirror and draw what I see portrait so I adapted a doodle that I use to do in high school.  I like to call it my personal icon.  The eye, eye brow and mouth are taken from the doodle, the original, was brightly coloured, to reflect by time spent as a model and make-up artist.  The 'nose' is an ankh which represents eternal life.  The 'hair' consists of the sun, moon, stars, which represents the universe.  Also included in the 'hair' is the glyph for my birth sign, Cancer.  Put it all together and it represents me and the universe forever.
